A Sense of Proportion: The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Frank Belknap Long This particular drawing was done soon after my wife and I spent a week in Paris. It owes a lot to the outstanding photographs of Eugene Atget. With many of the illustrations I do for Hippocampus Press I try to avoid any lines but instead create works using Stripping - a drawing entirely made from dots done one dot a time. It's labor intensive but I enjoy the mezzotint or etching like final effect.

Pen Drawing of Lovecraft 's home. While Andre Breton was living in New Youk city during WW2, he wrote about something he called The Great Invisibles." That idea or concept bears a remarkable resemblance to the concepts behind Lovecraft's work. Breton's Great Invisibles did not capture much attention, so the direction was not developed. Lovecraft's own work would not start to become truly noticed until the late 60's and 1970's. In both cases as Lovecraft would say the stars were not right yet.

I had a solo exhibit in Seattle and Nujabes stopped in and purchased two of my paintings. One was 12"x12" and that one was used for the cover of his CD Modal Soul. The other was 40"x30." I've had people contact me and visit me from different places in America, South America, and Europe concerning Modal Soul. H. P. Lovecraft and especially Clark Ashton Smith were talked about at length in the Surrealists Journal VVV published in 1942. Smith in the booklet First Papers of Surrealism, and later both Lovecraft and Smith in VVV in the article Such Pulps as Dreams are Made of. Smith lived in a primitive rural cabin with a low stone wall that he built surrounding it. The stone wall was in a sense his poetry and stories ...a type of wall from the industrialized world and its masses.
