in the old renovated theater kubin sits and his mind turns back to that enormous scaly bat-like creature and the woman's glove . the festival will begin soon , but those images keep coming back again and again ... he looks around and suddenly his reality splits, β€œall the faces around him begin to look peculiarly Animal Human; all sounds become strangely alien, divorced from their sources ; it begins to sound to him like a groaning thundering total language which he cannot understand, yet clearly the language seems to have a wholly spectral inner meaning ”. through the crowd in the lobby kubin finds the doors and wanders down the city streets in the autumn night. β€œ he is constantly overwhelmed ...by the dark power which makes him imagine strange animals, houses, landscapes, grotesque and ghastly situations. he feels indescribably happy in his enchanted world ...”

returning home kubin writes day and night for twelve weeks. in the novel a graphic artist receives a mysterious invitation . the title will be ...the other side ...and it will take place in the capital of a country called dreamland , deep in asia . kubin illustrates it himself with fifty two images ...and a map...

the book anticipates nationalism, militarism, fascism, world wars, and racial genocide . it will have an influence on franz kafka ...
